Torrential rain made it impossible for aircraft to land in Sydney

The plane, en route from Hong Kong to Sydney, was prevented from landing at Sydney this morning due to torrential rain and strong wind.

It landed at Newcastle Airport about 8.25am.




Manatee, FL Under Hard Freeze Warning

MANATEE -- Manatee and 12 other Florida counties are under a hard freeze this morning until 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A hard freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely, conditions that will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

Temperatures were expected to drop to around 29 degrees early this morning in Bradenton, and cooler inland, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind chill values were forecast to go as low as 21 in Bradenton, with north-northwest winds between 8 mph and 10 mph.

Thursday’s high was expected near 56, but with wind chill values as low as 20 early. Thursday night into Friday morning called for a low in Bradenton around 34.  >>More..

Canceled flights pile up in Northeast along with snow

Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights yesterday, mostly in the snowy Northeast, but they said travelers won't be stuck for days as they were after a Christmas weekend storm.

It will be easier to put stranded passengers on later flights, which aren't as full as they were during the holidays, according to the airlines.

Travel in and out of New York, the nation's busiest airspace, was very limited until yesterday afternoon. Officials at the region's three major airports said more than 1,700 flights were canceled.  >>More..
